Topics of discussion include demands on the actuary from the profession, those in place and those being proposed, and demands from management being placed on the actuary, and how the profession and Canadian Institute of Actuaries may be of assistance.

Description: This session from the 1981 SOA Spring Meeting concerns the relationship of product design and investment philosophy in light of the high interest rate environment and increased lapsation. Topics discussed were changes in the maturity of debt instruments, how withdrawals provisions affect product pricing, allocating specific classes of assets to product lines and surplus objectives resulting from the matching of assets and liabilities. Description: In Canada, the actuarial considerations involved in developing financial reporting and disclosure principles have for some years been under active study by the Canadian Institute of Actuaries CIA and others, with a goal of moving toward one system of financial reporting for all users. The author discusses current proposals starting with a 1974 report released by the CIA, and the work of an Advisory Committee with members from the actuarial and accounting professions, industry, and Provincial Insurance Departments, appointed by the Federal Superintendent of Insurance, which completed its work in the form of a written report.
