Authored by a Milliman team led by Alexandre Boumezoued, the report develops a framework for forecasting cause specific death rates. Included also is a Cause of Deaths Forecasting Tool and a user guide for the tool.

Description: This session will include a brief outline of the origin of the tontine from when it was first introduced by the government of England in the 17th century through its disappearance in the early 20th century. As we explore the history of tontines, we will discuss their multiple references throughout English (and French) literature, often vilified by most authors using them as their subject, and how they bear little resemblance to the insurance product that many contemporary financial scholars advocate as a viable annuity concept for today and the future. The presenters will cover the practicality of reintroducing a modernized version of these longevity pooling arrangements (i.e., where aggregate longevity risk is shared among a group and not incurred by the issuer) as a retirement savings vehicle. They will also touch upon different aspects of tontines, such as risk management and regulatory issues.

Description: The academy generator is widely applied in actuarial practice. Initially confined to regulatory reserving, companies are increasingly using the AAA/SOA generator over an ever widening range of applications testing the limits of the academy generator's intended function. The session will give a brief overview of the academy generator and the asset classes it can be used to model. It will also analyze the statistical properties of the academy scenarios and discuss the scenarios relative to standard validation criterion. Some of the challenges that actuaries face in using this framework will be reviewed and options for addressing these challenges will be offered.

Description: More than one million Americans have died in the past decade from drug overdoses, alcohol and suicide. Drug-related deaths have tripled since 2000, alcohol-induced deaths have reached a 35-year high, and suicides increased by 28 percent from 2000 to 2015. With one-fifth of Americans affected by mental illness each year, these epidemics constitute a public health crisis that is projected to worsen without proper interventions. As insurers, employers and state agencies start to seriously address these issues, actuaries well-versed in mental healthcare issues, interventions, and quality assessment will be invaluable partners in efforts to improve behavioral healthcare treatment throughout the country. The presenters have completed significant research concerning the opioid epidemic, suicide rates and the quality of behavioral healthcare treatment in the U.S. and will share patterns and statistics regarding the state of behavioral healthcare in the country, discuss the financial and population health benefits that can be achieved through effective medical-behavioral healthcare integration, and the role that actuaries can play in supporting these efforts. Attendees will walk away understanding the extent of the drug, alcohol, and suicide epidemics in the U.S and the need for a National Resilience Strategy to address them.

As a result of ageing workforce and increasing life expectancy, retirement savings gap is becoming a major social issue for many countries. An effective retirement systems require all stakeholders including the government, employers, retirement services providers and individuals to understand the risks involved, their roles and responsibilities, and to commit to do their part in tackling the retirement savings gap issue. This presentation will point out where improvements can be made from each stakeholder's perspectives, with a focus on the Asia markets which contain a mix of some of the most populous countries in the world and countries with very small population, developed economies as well as emerging markets, young and old labor force, and finally different cultures, all of which affects how people view and prepare for retirement.
