Description: This fifth call for essays aimed to gather perspectives, opinions and data on how to advance the state of effective retirement planning tools, products, and strategies to assist individuals, financial advisors, employers and other stakeholders. The goal was to meet two objectives: (1) identify retirement risks, and (2) how to better plan for and maintain a secure retirement.

Description: Stakeholders in a specific state (Minnesota) were interviewed about the potential value -- and obstacles -- of a catastrophic backstop program to handle long term care (LTC) financing needs. The design would entail a payroll deduction which would produce a fund to pay LTC expenses once a deductible period (of 1 to 4 years, depending on income) was reached. This design was believed to encourage enrollees to cover the front end better than done today, whether by private insurance or other means.

Description: Recently, the SCAN Foundation, AARP, LeadingAge, and HHS funded economic modeling conducted by Milliman and the Urban Institute around LTC reform elements. The LTC industry has over the years also generated ideas to address the on-coming expansion of LTC needs in the U.S. For this article, we have brought together three individuals who have long involvement with LTC financing to discuss some of the recent ideas and provide some perspectives on their pluses and minuses.

Description: Social Security provides financial protection by annuitizing retirement. This is not enough for many. My idea creates an additional annuity via Social Security.

Description: Populations are aging throughout the world. In all countries, there are many public policy and social issues related to long life from financing to health to social isolation and system supports. This panel will review key recent research and will offer an interactive discussion of some of the most important issues facing policy makers everywhere. To focus the discussion, we will examine these attributes through the lens of social capital. This session will focus on issues facing both developed and developing countries alike and compare and contrast different approaches being taken to address issues and their relative success.

Description: The primary motivation of this year’s call for essays was to identify potential solutions and new innovations being developed to assist workers and retirees better prepare for retirement. The current call drew 13 authors who submitted 18 excellent essays. The full essay collection is found in this publication and sets forth ideas that can be further developed or that will spur thinking for new products, planning tools and employee benefit plan strategies.
